March to Judge Handley's Grave | Handley 100th Anniversary

March to Judge Handley’s Grave

As part of the Handley 100th anniversary celebration, Handley alumni who participated as Winchester Public Schools students in the annual year-end “March to Judge Handley‘s Grave” are invited to commemorate the beloved tradition at this year‘s march on Monday, April 22 (rain date Tuesday, April 23).  During the ceremony, alumni of all ages will be invited to come forward by decade of graduation year, to lay their flowers upon Judge Handley‘s tomb. The Handley band and chorus will perform and short remarks will be made.

  • Rain date Tuesday, April, 23, 2024
  • Be inside the cemetery by 9:30 a.m. for the processional
  • Leave yourself time to get parked and to make your way up to the cemetery to be in
    place by 9:30 a.m.
  • Wear comfortable walking shoes and dress for the weather.
  • Bring your own flowers for laying on the grave, if desired.
  • Be aware that the March to the Grave of modern times does not involve all WPS schoolchildren and, obviously, no longer occurs on the last day of school.

If you are driving downtown for this event, plan to park at the Court Square Parking Garage. Although Boscawen Street will be closed off by Winchester Police due to the processional, you will be able to access the parking garage coming from the south on both the Kent Street and the Cameron Street sides of the garage. Ample parking will be available there for hourly parkers. Retain the ticket you receive when you pull into the garage for paying just before you leave the garage after the event. Loss of this ticket will cost incur a $15 fee.

When you come back to the garage after the event, take your ticket to the kiosk near the elevator on the ground level and make payment there by cash or credit card. An attendant will be available to assist. At the end of your payment transaction, you’ll receive a paid receipt which you will need in order to make the gate rise when exiting the garage in your vehicle.

For those able to walk a bit further, free parking is available at the Winchester Moose Lodge on Cork Street.

Enter the cemetery from the gate on Pleasant Valley Road. At the first circle, turn left (south) on Veterans Lane and park there along the road, edging onto the grass. A shuttle will come and transport you to the area of the processional and ceremony. Some seating will be available for those needing it. After the ceremony, shuttles will bring you back to the parking area.

Once inside Mount Hebron Cemetery, volunteers will direct you where to stand until it is time for the processional to the ceremony area. Limited seating will be available. Be sure to be in place by 9:30 am

Enjoy watching the processional of WPS students as they pass by and make their way to the Handley grave. After the WPS students pass by, designated “Decades Leaders” (holding signs indicating each decade from the 1940s to the 2020s) will pass by. Alumni from graduating classes of those decades should then leave their places and fold in behind their Decade Leader
and process as a Decade Group to the Handley grave.

At the grave area, stay with your Decade Group during the short ceremony. After the students have gone up to lay their flowers upon the grave, alumni will do so, in Decade order. Current Handley students will provide assistance.

After the ceremony is concluded, alumni should clear from the lanes to allow for the recessional of WPS students. Allow the students to depart before beginning to make your way back to the gatehouse or to the shuttle pick-up area.
