BACKGROUND

Eugene Smith moved with his family to the Winchester, Virginia area when he was a young boy. A largely self-taught artist who has traveled extensively, Eugene finds influences for his art in many of the places he visits. He says, though, that living in the Shenandoah Valley means that he doesn’t have to go far for inspiration. His ability to capture the landscapes and architecture of the area has made him an artistic staple of the community.

Eugene’s 2023 painting of John Handley High School is his third rendering of Winchester’s beloved high school from which his and his wife Sarah’s two children, Kayla and Brennan, both graduated. Previous renditions of Handley featured a landscape perspective from the school’s vast campus as well as an architectural focus of the school’s iconic cupola. This new painting, an architectural rendering of the school’s stately façade, features the beauty of the school’s campus in springtime.

Eugene and Sarah are pleased to make prints from this painting available to the Committee organizing the Handley 100th celebration of the school’s centennial anniversary, as a fund-raiser for the celebration. Only 100 limited edition signed and numbered Giclée prints will be available, beginning June 13, 2023, at Eugene’s gallery, at Handley 100th events, and on this website.

The Eugene B. Smith Gallery & Custom Framing Studio is located across from the Old Courthouse on the Old Town walking mall in Winchester. The gallery displays and sells Eugene’s original watercolors, signed prints and notecards. Custom framing is available at the gallery as well.
